Life Changes for Retired Members

Going Through a Life Change?

Sometimes life is unpredictable. Here is some KPERS info you may need if you have a life change.

If You Get Married

You may want to name a new beneficiary. Make changes anytime in your online account or send us a new Designation of Beneficiary form. If your name changes, you’ll want to complete a Name Change form. If your address changes, be sure to let us know. Update your address in your online account or send us a Change of Address form.

If You Get Divorced

It’s a good idea to review your beneficiaries. Make changes in your online account or send us a new Designation of Beneficiary form. If you get divorced, your former spouse may be able to claim part of your KPERS benefits under a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO). See QDRO Requirement and Forms for more info.
If your address changes, be sure to let us know. Update your address in your online account or send us a Change of Address form.

If Someone Passes Away

When you pass away, KPERS pays a $4,000 lump-sum retiree death benefit. But we don’t pay your benefit automatically. Your beneficiary should contact us to receive an application when the time comes.

Some retirees choose the joint-survivor option at retirement to provide a continuing monthly benefit for someone after the retiree’s death. If your joint survivor dies, be sure to let us know. We’ll cancel your joint-survivor option and increase your monthly benefit to the maximum amount. Keep in mind, you won’t be able to name a new joint survivor.

If your beneficiary passes away, please name new one. Make changes in your online account or send us a new Designation of Beneficiary form.
