When Can You Retire - Correctional KPERS Members

As a Correctional member, you may be eligible to retire at an earlier age than regular KPERS members. You must work in a Group A or B position for at least three years immediately before retirement and retire the first day of the month following your last day on the payroll to be eligible for Correctional age and service requirements.

Group A generally includes:
  • Most corrections officers and their supervisors.

Group B generally includes:

  • Correctional institution employees in certain power plant positions, correctional industries, food service supervision or maintenance operation supervision who have regular contact with inmates.

If your position is not Group A or B, or you left employment before retiring, you are a regular KPERS member. Please see the regular KPERS age and service qualifications.

“85 Points”

You can retire at any age, with full benefits, when you have 85 points. The 85 point rule is when your age and years of service credit added together equal 85. Every year you work, you will gain two points - one for each birthday and one for the year of service credit.
