Steps to Retire

  1. Attend a KPERS or KP&F Pre-Retirement Seminar.

  2. Find out when you are eligible to retire.

  3. Calculate a retirement benefit estimate.

  4. Choose a retirement payment option. Review the Retirement Options publication to consider your payment options.

  5. Submit your Application for Retirement form (KPERS-15) at least 30 days before the day you want to retire.
    You need to apply to receive your benefits. They do not begin automatically. You will need to provide birth and name change documents.

  6. The Retirement System will process your application. We will notify you if we need more information.

  7. The Retirement System will mail a letter to you with information about your benefit amount and taxes.

  8. Your monthly benefit payments will be directly deposited at your financial institution on the last working day
    of each month. You will receive your first benefit payment at the end of the month after your retirement date.
